#SproutChat Recap: How to Analyze, Interpret & Present Data From Social Media

As marketers we have access to a plethora of data. The landscape of tools that offer in-depth reporting is robust and the complimentary metrics that come directly from each social network are informative. This week at #SproutChat, we discussed which analytics are worth paying attention to and what to do with your social media data
.

Prioritize Your Time

The first step in analyzing your data is prioritizing your time by understanding which metrics are worth looking at. Make sure you determine your objectives and figure out what type of data will help you reach your goals-then dive into the numbers. Depending on your goals, you won’t need to dissect every single measurement available, so be sure to highlight the key 3-5 that will prove to senior management that you’re reaching your goals. If you’re unable to objectively measure what you need set benchmarks to track progress.

Correlate Metrics With Achieved Goals

Frequently and consistently monitor metrics in comparison to your goals. Pay attention to alternate factors lending to success and pivot and adjust if necessary. Don’t be afraid to tap colleagues for additional measurements in order to paint a more holistic picture of your social data,. Take credit for the results from your efforts and collaborate to work towards 10x-ing those achievements.

Use Tools to Scale Your Efforts

Don’t go at it alone! Use social media reporting tools to easily collect and organize metrics. A software is worth the invest, as it will be able to find data much quicker than you or your team can. A software or tool may also help you figure out which metrics to watch in the first place. When your whole team has access to social data, it streamlines progress and allows all of you to achieve more.

Present Your Data in a Way That Your Boss or Client Will Understand

Create an easily interpretable format and visualization of your data so that all stakeholders involved can quickly see the progress or opportunities for improvement. Feel free to get creative and distill the insight into its simplest format.

#SproutChat Recap: How to Run a Social Media Contest

A great way to engage your community on social is to show them your appreciation. Holding a social media contest can boost your following, generate valuable user-generated content and increase brand awareness in new communities and markets.

Throughout our #SproutChat we discussed the factors that are necessary for a contest on social to be successful. Our community offered tips on how to garner interest and keep track of entries and shared their thoughts on industry leaders and the ideal longevity of a contest on social.

Create a Worthwhile Contest That Supports Your Brand

It’s crucial you understand why you’re having a contest and determine what your goals are. Your strategy and the social network you choose to host your contest on will vary based on your primary objective.

If you want to build a mailing list, you’ll need to ask for email addresses for entry. If you’re low on content resources and budget, you’ll want participants to submit images or videos that your brand can leverage and share on social. If you want to build brand awareness, your first priority may be to come up with an eye-catching Twitter hashtag.

Start by talking to your team and work together to decide on a challenge that can be addressed and potentially solved with a contest.

It’s All About the User Experience

Understand what type of barrier to entry works best for your brand and audience. Before launching your contest, test out the path to entry and make sure the process is clear and easy to understand. There are a number of tools for social media monitoring that can help you build, execute and measure your efforts. Don’t neglect to explore your options and try to simplify any tedious data collection.

Prizes & Contest Duration Should Match

Consider the time and effort for entry and what a compatible prize would be. Make sure that the duration of your contest and the prizes you’re offering are comparable. If you’re missing the mark, you’ll likely realize it right away.

Award the best entrants as winners, but look for opportunities to highlight other participants that spent time and put effort into being involved. This will help strengthen brand loyalty and encourage more fans to participate in the future.

How to Get Followers on Instagram: A Full Guide

A Step-By-Step Guide to Launching a Branded Hashtag

Chris Messina, currently a Developer Lead at Uber, is credited as the inventor of the hashtag on Twitter. Originally intended to group content based on subject matter, the hashtag has been adopted across every popular social platform and has cemented its place in our culture.

Ever since its early implementation, a hashtag has been made popular because of the event or idea it was associated with. One of the earliest brands to successfully adopt the hashtag was South by Southwest. In 2007, anyone on Twitter could type in #SWSX and see what events at the Austin based conference were trending.

One of the greatest things about the hashtag is that originated from a Twitter user–not a marketing agency, not a brand and not a social platform. Maybe that’s why marketers are often mystified as to how to create a branded hashtag that goes viral.

There isn’t necessarily a science behind the perfect hashtag, but there are best practices that can be applied when creating a branded hashtag.

When to Use a Branded Hashtag

Most often, a hashtag is made popular because of the event or idea it supported. Still, there are other ways that brands can use a hashtag to join in the conversation.

Create a branded hashtag for:

  • Product launches
  • Promotions
  • Contests
  • Sponsored Events

Brands can also join into existing conversations, where it makes sense, by using trending hashtags. This will help you gain exposure as people scroll through their feeds or search a keyword.

Hashtag Best Practices

Not all hashtags are created equal. Developing a branded hashtag is no easy task but there are best practices and guidelines that can be followed.

Create a Shortlist of Hashtag Options

As you’re brainstorming potential hashtag options, remain authentic. Be yourself. Draft a shortlist of hashtags that come naturally and appeal to your target audience. Find inspiration from listicles online and your brand’s existing social data.

Research Your Proposed Hashtags

Once your shortlist is solidified, it’s time to do your research. Search each hashtag and variations of each hashtag across all of the social networks your brand is active one. Your team can stay organized and track its findings with a shared, spreadsheet.

When applicable, localizing your hashtag is an easy way to stand out. Don’t forget to account for this during your research. Warren recently attended The Impact Event Denver. Before the seminar, he was researching hashtags and found that many combinations of the event’s name, including #TIE16, were accounted for. In order to break through the clutter, he revised the hashtag to include a “d” for Denver.

At the time of the seminar, only one Tweet was attributed to #TIED16, making it the perfect option to implement.

Know Your Goal

What are you using a branded hashtag for? What are you hoping to accomplish? While it’s important to set objectives, it’s important to remember that your goals will vary based on which type of hashtag campaign you decide to run.

If you’re holding a big event, you know that fans will be sharing content surrounding it on social. That’s why It’s important to try to pick a hashtag prior to the event. At Social Media Unicorn, we look at who’s coming to an event a week before it takes place. Then, we make sure that the hashtag we is consistent on all marketing materials, including attendee badges.

Promote Your Hashtag

Once you’ve decided on a hashtag, it’s time to start promoting it. Share your hashtag wherever it makes sense.

Depending on the type of hashtag your brand is using, you’ll want to promote it on:

  • Slides during an event presentation
  • Product label
  • Facebook group
  • Facebook Event
  • Twitter bio
  • Instagram bio
  • Flyers, stickers or other promotional materials

Since hashtags are ingrained in our everyday life, there’s no need to overtly explain or preface its use.

Measure Your Results

Regardless of what you’re using your branded hashtag for, it’s important to use a social media management tool and set up parameters and brand keywords that allow you to track and measure the effectiveness of your campaign.

Warren shared #TIED16 with speakers and attendees before The Impact Event Denver took place. Three days before the conference, #TIED16 had already seen nearly 20 million impressions across multiple social channels.

The best hashtag is often the one that doesn’t read like it was written by a marketer. As you iterate and expand your efforts, remember the original spirit of the hashtag. Don’t lose sight of the authentic conversations, new ideas and viral memes that the hashtag brings to.

#SproutChat Recap: Building Your Professional Brand

In today’s marketplace, your personal brand matters. For better or worse, how you’re perceived in person and across your social and digital platforms can have an impact on your career opportunities. Building and maintaining a personal brand is a daunting task–even for marketers. We often struggle with where to even start.

This week at #SproutChat, we were join by Jeremey Goldman and Ali B. Zagat, authors of Getting to Like: How to Boost Your Personal and Professional Brand to Expand Opportunities, Grow Your Business, and Achieve Financial Success. The experts fielded our community’s questions and offered advice on how to perfect the art of personal branding to unlock new opportunities and achieve success.

Stand Out

Developing a personal brand is really all about standing out in a crowd of people with similar career backgrounds and work experiences. You want to be the one person that everyone remembers. Being memorable amid peers in your industry or field will help build a personal brand around your experiences and accomplishments. This can lead to recognition and new growth and development opportunities.

Measure Your Efforts

In order to achieve success, you need to understand what’s working and what’s not. That’s why it’s important to benchmark and measure your personal branding efforts. It may feel weird at first, but setting a metric that correlates with your goal is important.

For instance, perhaps you want to land an interview for a senior level job in digital marketing. You could start by measuring how many relevant LinkedIn profile views or inquires you receive from recruiters during the first month of your search. Maybe you’ve just launched a website and are using Twitter to direct your followers there. Using Google Analytics, you can quantify and account for how many people are viewing your content and learn where they are coming from. If there’s a bigger accomplishment that seems out of reach, set a strategy for getting there and be diligent and consistent in order to reach it.

Take the Conversation Offline

Establishing an eye-catching presence online is only one piece of the puzzle. Meeting in person will have a longer and much more lasting impact on someone than almost any interaction online. At networking events, help acquaintances recognize you by maintaining a current headshot in all of your digital profiles. In person it’s important to be as authentic as possible and embody the same brand you’ve built online, offline.
